What’s New on Metastatic Prostate Cancer

Pasadena Brain Injury and Tumor Care

Prostate Cancer is one of the more common types of cancer affecting men.  Through a CancerCare Connect conference call, we were able to learn about what’s new in the medical community about this disease.  Since testosterone acts as fuel for prostate cancer, one of the methods to combat the disease is through hormonal therapy to lower the production.  Prostate cancer can go into remission when such hormones are not present.

However, such therapy is not guaranteed to be successful, and new drugs are introduced after multiple failed attempts in hormonal therapy and multiple chemotherapy. There are new injections of radioactive drugs that aim to combat the disease with some success recently.  One of the speakers during the conference call, Dr. Susan Slovin, stressed that clinical trials are a very important consideration as part of a treatment, and it does not mean the patient is being treated as a guinea pig.  One reason is that cancer is ever-changing, and it becomes resistant to drugs.  Clinical trials introduce new impacts on the tumors where the biology of cancer cells can change and ultimately could mean better management of the tumor’s behavior.
