Different Types of Arthritis

Pasadena Alzheimer Care and Caregivers

A lot of people think that arthritis is only one disease, but arthritis is a group of more than 100 types of joint inflammation.  We are certainly not going to list every single type of arthritis here, but we want to shed some light on the most common types of the disease to raise awareness about the severity of these conditions and how they may affect the activities of daily living.

The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis.  When cartilage in joints wears out over time, bones rub against each other, and the friction creates pain and swelling, and it can happen to any joint in our body.

Another common type is rheumatoid arthritis. This is when the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints to cause swelling and pain, affecting mainly the hands, wrists, and knees.

Gout is a type of arthritis. If the body is unable to eliminate uric acid, then it creates “needle-like crystals” in the joint and causes painful swelling mostly in the knee, wrist, and big toe.

These are just 3 examples of arthritis, and it is not merely minor pains as myths may suggest.  It can truly affect the person physically as well as mentally with the types of pain they are in.  Furthermore, it makes daily living much more difficult.  As a result, advocacy for arthritis is important to raise awareness of the severe and widespread problem of this disease.
