Did you know that 25 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are not aware they have the condition? There are warning signs our bodies use to tell us things and if we listen and share with our doctors, we often can get in front of things before they begin to escalate. Look at 10 signs you may be diabetic.
- Bathroom visit frequency goes up – Diabetes inhibits the body’s ability to break down food into sugar resulting in more sugar sitting in your blood. The natural reaction to rid these levels is by way of urine. Many of us don’t keep track of our daily visits to the bathroom, but if urination is keeping you up at night or affecting your sleep it is time to speak to your doctor.
- The thirst is real – Frequent visits to the restroom to clear out excess sugar via urination can make you feel parched. To make matters worse, many patients seek refreshments in the form of soda, juices, or chocolate milk. This sugar-loaded option packs the blood with sugar which starts the cycle again.
- Notice the pounds dropping- Water weight reduction from frequent bathroom visits can materialize in the form of decreased weight on the scale. Calories are lost in the urine the body is no longer absorbing all of the calories from the sugar in your blood.
- Shaky and Hungry – With higher blood sugar, the body will struggle to retain glucose. Consuming high levels of carbohydrates can trigger unbalanced levels of insulin released by the body which can result in the shakes or worse cravings for more carbs or sugar.
- Constant Fatigue – Everyone has days where we just feel run down. Continuous fatigue is something to pay attention to, however. This could be a sign the fuel you give your body (food) is not being broken down the way it should be for use by the cells. This symptom may come on slower as type 2 diabetes can keep sugar levels elevated.
- Moody Behavior – When your blood sugar is on the fritz, the body simply does not feel well. High blood sugar can result in short-temperedness and even create symptoms of depression. Blood sugar management can stabilize our moods better.
- Blurred vision – Glucose build-up in the eye can interfere with organs’ ability to focus. Stabilizing blood sugar will readjust the lenses.
- Abrasions slower to heal – With elevated levels of blood sugar comes interference to the immune system. The body simply will not heal with normal efficiency.
- Tingly feet – High levels of blood sugar can complicate the nerves which in turn may result in tingly or numb extremities like our feet.
- UTI or Yeast infections – Elevated levels of sugar in the body can result in a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. Reoccurring infections should always be brought to the attention of your doctor and will often result in a test for diabetes if you have not already had one.
