Traveling Tips for Those with ALS

Many of us would decide to stay home when we are sick with the flu, but people with more serious diseases such as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or ALS, might be secluded from the outside world.  However, someone should not be limited simply because of their disability.  A great article on the ALS Association website discussed how to plan for ALS patients to make it easier for the patients and to have less frustration while traveling.  Some of the tips include arriving at the airport early, checking your wheelchair or scooter at the boarding gate, using dry cell batteries instead of the wet cell on the power chairs, and requesting the return of equipment if there is a layover.  In addition, airlines are required to have a Complaint Resolution Officer to deal with any problems that a disabled person may encounter, so if there is a problem, please seek this officer for help.
