April Calloway is a 63-year-old woman who lives in Placentia, CA and was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, also known as ALS, a couple years ago. The disease progressively destroys the motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord, causing the brain to fail when trying to initiate movement of voluntary muscles such as the hands, arms, feet, and legs. As the disease progresses, muscles become weaker and begin to shrink, and total paralysis can occur in late stages of the disease.

According to April’s physician, the disease has progressed at an alarming rate. She has difficulty with mobility that requires her to use a walker. Her leg muscles were the first to become affected by the disease, but she was still able to perform basic tasks because she had all the strength in her arms and hands. Once her arm muscles began to weaken, it became a problem.

April’s son John, who lives on the east coast now, was contacted by April’s physician about her condition and progressing disability. John flew to California to visit his mother, speak with the physician, and look for a caregiver for his mother. He found a caregiver named Jeannie from A-1 Home Care Agency Services after interviewing several individuals from various local agencies.

Jeannie provides weekly updates to John through Skype. Not only does Jeannie provide April with much needed companionship, she provides assistance with anything April needs. It’s been about eight months since April first started receiving care from Jeannie.

Jeannie provides 24-hour care for April and assistance with healthy meal preparation, mobility assistance, driving into town for recreational purposes, some light housekeeping, and personal tasks such as helping April get dressed, shower, use the toilet, and get into and out of bed.
