Lou Gehrig’s Disease, also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a progressively debilitating disease of the nerve cells that control voluntary muscle function. According to the ALS Association, a little over 5,600 people are diagnosed with the disease each year in the United States.

Each case of ALS is unique and can progress slowly or quickly. Initial symptoms include muscle weakness in the limbs or muscles of speech, swallowing, or breathing; however, one individual will initially experience difficulty getting dressed, while another individual might have trouble walking up stairs or have trouble controlling their speech.
