Multiple Sclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that causes degeneration of the insulating substance of nerve cells called myelin.  When myelin degenerates, it causes demyelination and scarring in the affected area that makes it difficult for the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other effectively.  This can lead to symptoms in the affected individual that occur in unpredictable relapse attacks that become increasingly worse with each attack or the disease can steadily progress over time.
