Applying for Veterans Benefits
As Elderly and Senior individuals retire from the workforce, they may begin to struggle with costs of daily living if they haven’t become financially well-off from their work life. This can become a serious problem, especially when trying to pay for additional services such as home care, which can put a serious dent in a bank account if the services are required on a consistent basis.
The Veterans Administration provides monetary assistance for Elderly and Senior individuals who meet certain eligibility requirements. This assistance, called Veterans Benefits, can be used to pay for homecare services, but one must apply and qualify first.
The VA offers two benefits called Veterans Pension and the Aid and Attendance Benefit. To be considered for either, each applicant must have served at least 90 days of active duty service during a wartime period and be at least 65 years old, OR receiving Social Security Disability Insurance, OR receiving Supplemental Security Income, OR totally disabled.
For pension, yearly family income must not exceed the amount set by Congress, but if your income does exceed the limit, you can still be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit if you can prove that you require the care services of another individual to perform tasks of daily living and stay safe in the home. For the A&A benefit, the VA recommends that you submit a physician’s report that details any disease or condition that you have that produces physical or mental impairment that makes you dependent on someone else for safety and well-being.
