3 Summer Safety Tips for the Elderly

With the weather all warmed up and the sun staying out longer than usual comes a rise in summer safety concerns among seniors in Calabasas.

But A-1 Home Care is the leading non-medical home care agency in Los Angeles and Orange County, and would like to provide you with these three simple warm-weather tips for maintaining your health and having a blast this summer all at once:

  1. Stay Hydrated. Did you know that by the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated? So the moment your lips start feeling parched or you start feeling light-headed, don’t wait another second– your body’s need for water has already began, and is now nearing critical mass! Try to drink up to eight glasses of water each day, or even more if you’re out in the sun a lot during these warmer months.
  2. Use Sunscreen. Skin cancer is a common killer among seniors today– perhaps a surprising statistic when you consider that sunscreen is a simple way to help prevent even the most common skin cancers out there. Remember to lather up every time you’re getting ready to step out under the sun, and wear a wide-brimmed hat for good measure.
  3. Listen To Your Body. If you start to feel fatigued, moody, light-headed, or just plain weird– even if you’ve had enough water to drink and don’t feel as though you’re overexerting yourself– take a hint and get inside where it’s cooler. After all, such symptoms are often the body’s way of notifying us that we’re on our way to suffering a heat stroke if we aren’t careful.
