Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system that deteriorates the upper and lower motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord over time. As the nerve cells deteriorate, so does the functioning of the muscles throughout the body. Muscles become weak, shrink in size, and eventually all movement and dexterity is lost. In advanced stages of the disease, the individual may experience problems with speech, breathing, and swallowing.
