COPD / PULMONARY / RESPIRATORY DISEASE AND THE ELDERLY

COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is caused by multiple lung diseases that block air flow. The most common two being bronchitis and emphysema.

COPD requires a medical diagnosis, but common symptoms are:

  • Shortness of Breath
  • Wheezing
  • Fatigue
  • A Feeling of Pressure in the Chest
  • Either a Dry Cough or with Phlegm

COPD makes completing daily tasks for elderly and seniors very difficult and they may require help with personal care, bathing, grooming, and household chores.

PULMONARY AND RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS

Other common respiratory and Pulmonary conditions that affect seniors and elderly are:

  • Respiratory Infections
  • Bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Tuberculosis
  • Bronchial Asthma

This is why our elderly and seniors are most vulnerable to:

Medical centers, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, convalescent homes, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and assisted living communities are still taking precautions to keep our vulnerable seniors and elderly safe from all respiratory and pulmonary diseases but it is still safer for them to remain at home if recovering from any surgery or illness.

COPD AND HOME CARE SERVICES

As people age, they can develop arthritis, aches and pain, and have difficulty with balance and mobility. This makes it especially problematic for some elderly, disabled, and senior individuals to complete household tasks and chores and to maintain their own personal hygiene and grooming.

If they are also suffering from COPD or another respiratory ailment and fatigue, it can become next to impossible without help.
